Job Description

Regional Health System is a new three hospital health system located in the Yakima Valley region of Washington State. Sunnyside Healthcare is purchasing Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center and Toppenish Community Hospital from Community Health Systems for approximately $37 Million plus working capital. This will return Yakima Regional and Toppenish to not-for-profit community status. The acquisition is being financed through private debt. There will be a new Health System Board of Directors which will be responsible for system oversight and strategic direction of Regional Health System. Each hospital will also have a local Board of Directors. The vision of the new health system is to be the regional comprehensive healthcare provider of choice for the communities in which it serves.

Main Purpose

The Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) reports to John Gallagher, President & CEO of Regional Health System and is responsible for developing and managing all programs required to recruit, retain, develop, motivate and reward hospital employees of the new health system. The position will be located in the Regional Health corporate office in Yakima. The CHRO will oversee employee relations, labor relations, employee health services, compensation and benefits, HRIS, and hospital policies and procedures. And he/she will ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations governing employment and labor relations. The final Regional Health corporate staff has not been determined yet but will probably include finance, IT, marketing and business development, human resources, legal and revenue cycle. All three hospitals are unionized; the WSNA union is at 3 hospitals and the SIEU union is at 2 hospitals.

Competencies / Skills

• A Bachelor’s degree in human resource management, hospital administration, industrial relations or related field is required. • Master’s degree in business, health administration or related field is preferred. • Multi-hospital human resources experience and several years as a Director or VP of Human Resources in a hospital system is required. Mergers and acquisition experience is ideal. • Labor relations experience is also very helpful as all three hospitals are unionized. • PHR or SPHR certification is strongly preferred • Five years’ experience as a hospital or system human resources officer in a similar sized hospital with a successful track record of progressive responsibilities and at least five years of generalist experience is required. A strong number two or assistant VP in a larger hospital or system may be considered.
